Pixar Animation Studios, the production team for the Cars movies, will not be producing the film. Instead, it will be produced by DisneyToon Studios. It was initially set to be released as a direct-to-video film, but will now be theatrically released by Walt Disney Pictures on August 9, 2013 in the Disney Digital 3D and RealD 3D formats.
Despite the fact that Pixar isn't producing the film, John Lasseter, being chief creative officer of both Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios (and director of Cars and Cars 2), will be one of the producers.

Having grown up around planes, I am really looking forward to Disney-Pixar's Planes. I hope it will be as fun and successful as Cars.
Speaking of which, I don't know why I started out my comment the way I did. Obviously I grew up around cars, too.
LOL Tim! As a HUGE of Cars am really looking forward to this release.
Hoping the film is as successful as the Cars franchise. Not sure if you're aware, a sequel is already in the works. Would love to see Propwash Junction come to life as did Radiator Springs in the theme parks.
