True Originals: Walt Disney and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit

D23, the first official community for Disney fans was launched yesterday (03-10-09) and included at Boutique 23 was a General Limited-Edition figurine from the Walt Disney Classics Collection.

Before Mickey came to be, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit hopped to animated stardom from the pen and ink of the early Disney Brothers Studio. This dapper Walt Disney sculpture celebrates his seminal success with the happy-go-lucky hare.

Plussed with pewter ears, it is presented on custom hardwood base with inlaid porcelain plaque commemorating "Walt Disney and Oswald'' in a vintage art font. The sculpture can be removed from its base. Sculpted by renowned Disney artist Ruben Procopio, the sculpture is a General Limited Edition of 1,500.

400 of the General Limited Edition will be produced with an exclusive Walt Disney Archives Collection/D23 backstamp and ready to ship in July. This special backstamp version is available only at DisneyShopping.com.

The remaining portion of 1,100 will be available to authorized WDCC retailers and will begin shipping to them in September.

Special Update: Ruben has recently updated his blog, Masked Avenger Studios with concept sketches and unpainted resin images of Walt Disney and Oswald (click on image at left).

Looks great to me. I know some don't think so. Great companion to Walt and Mickey from DL 50th.

I'm now a charter member and also ordered one of the 400 with the backstamp.

Does anyone else think this would also make a nice statue in the revamped DCA along Buena Vista Street?

We, too, are Charter Members of D23and ordered this piece as well. It will be a great companion piece to Walt and Mickey in the chair, and also Sharing the Vision.

After all, if it weren't for Walt's visions where would will all be in this crazy world!

I also think it's a great piece to kick off the whole D23 concept.

So I've become D23 as well but have some concerns about the 400 LE backstamp. When talking to Disneyshopping yesterday, I was told there is no guarantee when ordering the piece that you will get a special backstamped one with the D23 on it. I escalated to a supervisor and was told the same thing. The supervisor is contacting the shipping department to determine if it is possible to secure one with the special backstamp. I'm suppose to hear back today.

Hi Geoffrey,

How did you make out?

It is my understanding, D23 Members can order up to the 400 sub-edition of the special Walt Disney Archives Collection (WDAC)/D23 backstamp version of the WDCC Walt and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Sculpture ("True Originals") releasing in July.

Once they have taken reservations for the 400 (on a first-come first-served basis), it will be sold out.

The standard backstamp version (the remaining portion of 1,100 pieces of the general edition size), will be available with a target release in September and is NOT exclusive to D23 Members. It will be available through participating WDCC authorized retailers while supplies last.

Hope this helps.

I received a call today to state the ones currently being sold on the shopping.com website are the ones with the special backstamp. I joined and ordered my piece.

Thanks for the information. Should be set to go!
