Sharing My WDCC Beach/Tropical Themed Displays

When working from home, I work in our 'Sunroom' .. When we built this room, living in Western PA, wanted to add a little of Florida and the warm sunny beaches theming to the room.

The Walt Disney Classics Collection has done some great sculptures over the years that worked well in the room and captured the theming we were going for.

Review: Snow White & Prince "Fairytale Ending"

The last of the releases from the Fall 2012 Releases has arrived at retailers and has already began shipping if it hasn't already arrived on your doorstep.

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the Walt Disney Classics Collection presents the princess who started it all in the arms of her gallant Prince ... Snow White.

Thought this sculpture was a very nice choice to honor the film's milestone anniversary.  You may recall at the height of the pin craze, the Walt Disney Classics Collection had produced pins depicting the Dancing Cinderella & Dancing Aurora sculptures and a pin of the Prince holding Snow White.  I was always surprised they never did a sculpture in that same pose .. until now.

I really like the sense of movement in this piece, in the way the Prince is lifting Snow White in his arms and you can see that within the way the folds of her dress are depicted.  I also like how her face was sculpted, capturing that cherubic quality of hers.

To get an idea of scale, I have mine displayed with Snow White on Horse with Prince (2003 Numbered Limited Edition), the Wishing Well (1999 Open Edition) and Dopey (2009 Membership Gift).

'Fairytale Ending' sculpted by Dusty Horner (plussed with pewter legs and sword) is a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 750 and features the 20th Anniversary backstamp.

Review: Ebenezer Scrooge & Tiny Tim

When the Walt Disney Classics Collection released Scrooge & Daisy and Nephews & Tree from Mickey's Christmas Carol in 2010-2011, I was hoping we would see more from Fezziwig's Party, specifically Mr. Toad as Fezziwig.  Will admit, not disappointed in the least of the choice of the next release to follow ... Scrooge and Tiny Tim.

What catches you immediately (and tried to capture that in the photos I took of mine) is the genuine love between Ebenezer Scrooge (Scrooge McDuck) and Tiny Tim (Mickey's nephew, Morty).  Bruce did a great job in capturing the emotion between these two characters and Tiny Tim clutching his teddy bear, a gift from skinflint himself, Mr. Scrooge.

The rug base captures the stylized animation of this classic short.

Review: The Summer Fairies from 'Fantasia'

One of last week's Fall 2012 Releases, the Summer Fairies from Fantasia, began to arrive at retailers and started to ship by the end of the week.  The sculpture features the 3 summer fairies as they're transitioning from summer into fall, perfect timing as we're approaching summer's end as well.

The sculpture marks the debut of the Green Fairies. What struck me the first time I saw this sculpture were the subtle gold tones in the leaves where each fairy is either landing or resting and the personality (on closer view) of each of their faces. To truly appreciate this sculpture, I suggest displaying on a lower shelf to capture the color change in the leaves, that you don't see if displayed on a higher shelf.

This sculpture ranks up there in my favorites, along with the Autumn and Dewdrop Fairies as my favorite.

Helpful Hints in Unpacking Your Sculpture

  • Remove foam piece below front leaf before removing the sculpture.
  • Open plastic covering carefully.
  • Lift the piece out slowly and carefully by the base lifting it straight up. Do not pivot. Ensure that the wings on the back fairy do not get caught in the styrofoam.
  • Carefully remove the foam between the wings of the back fairy.
  • Also when removing the foam between the two front fairies, be careful the left arm of the middle fairy does not get caught in the foam.
  • If placing the sculpture back in the box, ensure that none of the elements come into contact with the styrofoam.

Once successfully unpacked, you can breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy :)

Revisiting Fantasia!

With the announcement this past week of the latest release from Fantasia, the Summer Fairies, it's sparked conversation on other releases from this classic film that collectors would like to see in the future.

Suggestions have ranged from the Snowflake Fairies, Arabian Fish and Russian Dancers to Centaurs (to compliment the previously released Pink & Blue Centaurettes) and Centaurettes (specifically the Nubian Centaurettes) to compliment the previously released Bacchus & Jacchus.

This discussion prompted me to think of some of the more recent releases from this classic film.

Lily of the Valley Fairy

Even when still, as in this sculpted portrayal of the Lily of the Valley Fairy, the dainty sprite conveys a spirit of motion. The fantastical Fairy motif is one of the most fanciful of the many entrancing elements that make up “The Nutcracker Suite” for, while many of the characters are nature’s own flora and fauna, the gossamer fairies are beings of pure fantasy.

Richly plussed with bronze details including the flower stem and the glistening Fairy herself, this exquisite sculpture embodies all the enchantment of Walt Disney’s animated masterpiece and makes the ideal complement for the other dazzling Fantasia Fairy pieces from the Walt Disney Classics Collection.

"The Gentle Glow of a Luminous Lily" sculpted by Kent Melton is a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 500.

Bacchus & Jacchus

A highlight of Walt Disney’s animated masterwork, “The Pastoral Symphony” really picks up when Bacchus, the roly-poly god of wine and revelry, totters onto the scene. Both he and his unicorn-like donkey, Jacchus, are a bit tipsy, but they know how to liven up an Olympian party.

Plussed with pewter, this sculpture conveys all the festive fun of these unique and rarely portrayed characters.

"Braying Bacchanalia" sculpted by Kent Melton is a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 750.

Pegasus Family

Walt Disney’s masterpiece Fantasia is a universe of animated treasures, including the celebrated segment that beautifully animates “The Pastoral Symphony.”

Soaring serenely over the Olympian landscape is a majestic mother Pegasus who, once settled, tends to her multicolored babies in an elegant nest.

The Pegasus Family ("Mythic Menagerie"), sculpted by Kent Melton is a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 500.

Celebrating 75 Years!!

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfsthe Walt Disney Classics Collection presents the princess who started it all in the arms of her gallant Prince.

Walt saw this loyal royal as an essential element of the timeless fairy tale. “I thought it was a perfect story,” said Walt. “I had the sympathetic Dwarfs… I had the heavy; I had the prince and the girl, the romance. I just thought it was a perfect story.”

The “heavy” is, of course, the Evil Queen, but the Prince’s true love is more powerful than her wickedness, for it is his kiss that awakens Snow White from her spellbound sleep.

Plussed with pewter legs and sword, this princely sculpture handsomely mirrors the glorious happy-everafter of Walt’s first—and most enduring and endearing—animated feature.

'Fairytale Ending' sculpted by Dusty Horner is a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 750 and features the 20th Anniversary Backstamp.

The Green Fairies Make Their Debut!

In creating the “Nutcracker Suite” sequence for Fantasia, Walt Disney told his filmmakers, “It should be something beautiful and something fantastic”, adding that he wanted a “a will-o’- the-wisp feeling.”

In response, the Disney artists created exceptionally elaborate animation cels to attain the fanciful feeling the master storyteller sought, and this new sculpture perfectly captures that ethereal spirit.

Portraying the garden-fresh Summer Fairies, who charmingly awaken to celebrate the full flowering of Summer, this exquisitely sculpted piece conveys all the loveliness of nature and the magic of these sweet sprites.

Plussed with three bronze fairies, this enchanting sculpture reflects the delicate artistry of Walt Disney’s animated masterpiece. This latest Fantasia sculpture is indeed something beautiful, something fantastic, and perfectly complements the Walt Disney Classics Collection’s other entrancing Fantasia Fairy sculptures.

Special Note: This is the first time the green Summer Fairies have been depicted.  Previous releases included the Milkweeds, Yellow, Pink, and Blue, sometimes different sculptures/ornaments with the same colored fairies in a slightly different moment, but never the green.

'Summer's Twilight, Autumn's Dawn' sculpted by Kent Melton is a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 500 and features the 20th Anniversary Backstamp.

Plussed with pewter hands and neck, this delightfully demonic denizen of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas joins all the other weirdly lovable Walt Disney Classics Collection sculptures inspired by that frighteningly fun-filled film. Whether it’s Halloween, Christmas or whatever the season, the Harlequin Demon knows how to scare up some high-spirited hijinks.

Latest Release in 'Mickey's Christmas Carol Series'

Though he naturally excels at portraying the stingy and self-centered side of that notorious skinflint Ebenezer Scrooge, Scrooge McDuck also deftly performs the holiday spirited side of Charles Dickens’ most famous character.

This yuletide transformation is merrily manifested when Scrooge (still attired in his nightgown and fuzzy slippers) pays a Christmas morning visit to the humble home of the Cratchit family, heartwarmingly accepting a hug from Tiny Tim after handing out some holiday goodies.

Embodying the joy of the season as seen in Disney’s Academy Award® nominated animated featurette Mickey’s Christmas Carolboth reformed miser and teddy bear-clasping mouse (played by one of Mickey’s twin nephews) radiate the heart, humanity and good will of Christmas all year round.

'Tidings of Joy and Goodwill' (latest release in the Mickey's Christmas Carol Series) was sculpted by Bruce Lau and Limited to Production Year 2012.
