Goofy Games: Summer Premiere Event

The 2008 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, will be celebrated this summer at the Beijing National Stadium in Beijing, People's Republic of China. This years Summer Premiere Event featured sculpture is a perfect tie-in to the upcoming Olympics. At left is a preview of the event postcard that will be mailing soon.

The 2008 Summer Premiere Event Sculpture will feature Goofy from The Olympic Champ (1942). Torchbearer, a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 2,008, sculpted by Patrick Romandy-Simmons will be available through Authorized Walt Disney Classics Collection Dealers and the Walt Disney Theme Parks, June 20-22, 2008.

As was common for shorts starring Disney's clumsy anthropomorphic dog, Goofy remains silent as a calm narrator provides contrast to the pratfalls on screen. In ancient Greece nearly 3000 years ago, a solo Goof illustrates different techniques of foot racing as well as hurdling, pole-vaulting, hammer-throwing and the decathlon, all events in the early days of the Olympics. Needless to say, visual gags are in high supply, from a finger-burning Olympic torch to a hammer throw which ends with a potent discovery of oil.

Patrick still does a wonderful job with Goofy: great looking piece! Should make for a nice display with the other WDCC Goofy sport-related pieces.

Saw DisneyGallery.com has a page up for the event at Disneyland, but no information about an exclusive Arribas gift as used to be the norm for their location. Barbossa didn't receive a gift last winter and now Goofy doesn't have mention of one. Have you heard anything about DL doing something special or have they ended the exclusive WDCC gift with purchase for the events?

Hi Jason,

No, haven't heard if Disneyland Resort will be doing a gift with purchase. As you mentioned, they didn't do one with Barbossa this past December.

If not, I'm sure Enesco will be blamed by some. God forbit that Disney and/or Aribbas Bros. decided to no longer offer the gift with purchase :)

If I hear of them doing one, will be sure to pass along that information. I recommend to keeping checking back with disneygallery.com.

Thanks Don.

Had just been curious if you'd gotten any official word about DL discontinuing the Arribas Gift with Purchase program since this makes two in a row now. Always tried to pick it up via Angel if I happened to like the gift.

LOL - and you're probably right about some trying to place the blame on Enesco for it.

Maybe it's just a temporary situation, and we'll see it start up again in the future as I think it was popular.

Hey Jason
The Tiki Room 45th Anniversary event weekend is that same June 21/22 weekend in Disneyland. My guess is that they are more focused on that event which has lots of product being released.

Although, Disney Gallery does have a way of not posting event information until last minute some times, so there may be hope for you yet on that Arribas gift.
