It's been quite a while since we've had a poll here on the blog.  A discussion on Friday with some fellow WDCC collectors regarding the recent sell-through of Pinocchio & Jiminy Cricket and Peter Pan, Wendy & Tinker Bell, we got to discussing our favorite sculpt of this year's releases.

Review: Peter Pan, Wendy and Tinker Bell

This was one of the most anticipated sculptures of the Summer 2012 announcement!  

Until you see the actual sculpture in person, you don't get that feel of 'movement' as Peter is leaning back (as if ready to fall over) not knowing what to expect (since he's never been kissed) as Wendy leans in and Tink is giving her all to make sure she doesn't kiss Peter.

As you can see in the images taken directly looking at Peter, it's quite comical as his eyes are coming together focusing on Wendy's lips and the look of shock and bewilderment in his face.

Given the size of Tinker Bell, the detail is actually quite good.  So many times when a miniature is this small, a lot of the detail is lost.  This is probably my favorite Wendy to date, facially the most accurate to the film.

The sculpture is plussed with a pewter feather in Peter’s hat, pewter legs for Wendy, and a bronze Tinker Bell.  It was announced yesterday this sculpture has sold through to retailers!

"I'm So Happy, I Think I'll Give You a Kiss" sculpted by Dusty Horner is a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 1,500 and the second time the Nursery Scene has been visited by the Walt Disney Classics Collection.

The first scene included Peter Pan, Wendy, John, Michael and Nana (all sculpted by Kent Melton), a Bed Base and Window Base (sculpted by Patrick Romandy-Simmons) which included a Tinker Bell miniature (sculpted by Chris Peterson).

Another feature of this sculpture I like is that the Walt Disney Classics Collection has been consistent in the sizing of the releases from this film.

For those who might be collecting from this film only, it's nice you can group your pieces from the earliest release (Peter Pan, far right released in June 1994 as part of the Skull Rock Scene sculpted by Kent Melton that also included Captain Hook, the Crocodile and Mr. Smee) to Peter and the Mermaids (released in January 2007, sculpted by Dusty Horner) to this most current release of him with Wendy and Tinker Bell.

Dick Van Dyke and The Vantastix perform at D23 Expo

It’s a Musical “Jolly Holiday” as Dick Van Dyke & The Vantastix
Bring Harmony and Melodic Fun to First Night of Disney’s D23 Expo, August 19-21, 2011 

BURBANK, Calif. (July 29, 2011) – Disney fans attending the first day of Disney’s D23 Expo, presented by D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, August 19-21 at the Anaheim Convention Center, will be able to end their day with an unforgettable evening of harmony provided by Dick Van Dyke & The Vantastix. The popular vocal quartet is comprised of legendary television, Broadway, and film star Dick Van Dyke and three renowned west coast musicians—Mike Mendyke, Bryan Chadima and Eric Bradley. The group will appear in concert on Stage 23 at the D23 Expo on Friday, August 19, 2011, at 8:15 p.m.

Songs from Van Dyke’s varied entertainment career in addition to many well-known Disney hits and timeless pop standards will be performed by Van Dyke and The Vantastix in a show rich in humor, pure entertainment and sing-along favorites. Much of the show’s song roster is based on Put On A Happy Face, the group’s inaugural a cappella album, which features 14 well-known tunes. The CD will be available for purchase in the D23 Expo Treasure Trove store.

Dick Van Dyke & The Vantastix is the result of a chance meeting of Van Dyke and Mendyke at a Malibu coffee shop in September 2000. With the addition of Chadima and Bradley, the group started "just for fun," gathering weekly for pizza and singing around Van Dyke’s piano, and soon built up an impressive repertoire of children's songs and standards.

After their first casual performance during the wrap party for Van Dyke’s long-running mystery TV series Diagnosis Murder, the group began to get requests to appear at charity events and benefits. They have performed at the City of Hope Hospital; the Beverly Hilton for the Society of Singers Concert honoring Dame Julie Andrews; the Hollywood Bowl as part of an evening of TV theme songs; and at the awarding of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Rose Marie, who appeared with Van Dyke on The Dick Van Dyke Show.

There have also been television appearances at the TV Land Awards, Larry King Live, and a performance of the National Anthem for the NBA Playoffs and more. The group continues to perform at benefits in the greater Los Angeles area.

“Hard work and planning are important if one wants to get ahead in life,” Van Dyke says. “More important is leaving one's self open to the twists and turns, the wonderful surprises that life has to offer. If you can't bend with the wind, go with the flow, you're gonna miss some great adventures. These three guys walked into my life from out of nowhere and turned my Golden Years into pure platinum. Dick Van Dyke – Van Dyke began his remarkable career more than 50 years ago in a record-pantomime act called The Merry Mutes. He then went on to host several TV shows before starring on Broadway in Bye Bye Birdie, for which he received a Tony Award^®. The classic sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show came next, then the screen version of Birdie, followed by the classic Disney film musical Mary Poppins, the equally adored movie musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the recent hit Night at the Museum, and a host of other wonderfully entertaining films. Winner of five Emmy Awards^®, Van Dyke completed nine seasons of the TV series Diagnosis Murder.

Bryan Chadima – Bryan Chadima is a writer, musical director, arranger, and singer. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from Western Michigan University. He has toured nationally and recorded albums with numerous vocal groups and shows including Blind Man's Bluff, Gold Company, Vox Lumiere, and The Three Waiters. His musical directing credits include Klub Kokomo and Baby It's You. Chadima arranges most of the material performed by the Vantastix.

Eric Bradley – Bradley’s road to Los Angeles began in Connecticut where he grew up then at the University of Miami, where he studied music, film, and television, and then to Chicago, where he started his career as a vocalist and voice-over actor. Bradley now enjoys a career as a studio singer in LA. His film and TV credits include The Simpsons Movie, Spiderman 3, Blades of Glory, King Kong, Superman Returns, The Polar Express, Enchanted, I Am Legend, How I Met Your Mother, Family Guy, and the Oscars telecast. He also sings with jazz sensation Sixth Wave, the 2001 National Harmony Sweepstakes Champions.

Mike Mendyke – An MIT graduate and former NASA engineer with degrees in aerospace engineering and music, Mendyke believes every vocal group should include at least one rocket scientist. After eight years in the defense industry, he began recording albums and touring the U.S. and Japan with the vocal group Five O'Clock Shadow. A longtime advocate of vocal music, Mendyke is a past board member and former treasurer for The Contemporary A Cappella Society. Mendyke also runs an online marketing business, as well as music distribution services.

Tickets to the D23 Expo are available at http://www.D23Expo.com. Admission includes access to all experiences and entertainment at the D23 Expo, including the Disney Legends Ceremony, and can be purchased for single days or for the full three days of festivities. Admission is $47 for a one-day adult ticket and $37 for children 3-12. Three-day passes are $136 for adults and $106 for children. Members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club will receive a discount for up to four admissions, as well as early entry to each day of the D23 Expo for themselves and their guests.

Walt Disney Classics Collection Announces Two More Recent Sell Throughs!

The Walt Disney Classics Collection announced today the Sold Out status of the following:

Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket

Knowing the star of Pinocchio had to be appealing, WaltDisney directed his artists to “win the audience to the little guy.” The lovable living puppet was enhanced with vocal artist Dickie Jones, who Walt said, had a “typical nice boy’s voice.”

Walt also created a cricket sidekick, but reported, “At first we made Jiminy sort of a pompous fellow – kind of a windbag,” but voice artist Cliff Edwards’ performance
had “so much life and fun in it that we altered the character to conform to the voice. Thus Jiminy comes to the screen... lively and full of quips.”

Jiminy (the cricket-sized sculpture is bronze) wants the little woodenhead to call on him any time, so as the little conscience cheerfully chirps, all Pinocchio needs to do is give a little whistle.

Anytime you need me, you know, just whistle!, sculpted by Bruce Lau is a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 750.

Peter Pan, Wendy and Tinker Bell

When Peter Pan declares he’s taking Wendy Darling to Never Land, the entranced young girl is so overjoyed that she decides she will give Peter a kiss — and tiny but temperamental Tinker Bell is having none of it. As for Peter, he doesn’t know what a kiss is but he’s thrown off balance at the prospect of receiving one…a rare occurrence for the bold boy from the realm of enchantment.

Plussed with a pewter feather in Peter’s hat, pewter legs for Wendy, and a bronze Tinker Bell, this dynamic sculpture — bringing together the three most treasured figures from the spellbinding tale of Never Land —reflects Walt Disney’s words: “All the characters in Peter Pan are in some way touched with magic,”even, as Walt described her, “beloved Wendy.”

Disney Interactive Media Group to Preview Upcoming Video Games at D23 Expo 2011!

DISNEY INTERACTIVE MEDIA GROUP TO GIVE D23 EXPO ATTENDEES HANDS-ON FUN WITH THE LATEST INTERACTIVE GAMES AND ONLINE ART ACTIVITIES

Guests to Preview Upcoming Video Games, Compete in Interactive Art Contests on Disney.com’s Create and Meet Legendary Video Game Designer Warren Spector, Creator of Disney Epic Mickey

BURBANK, CA –July 25, 2011 – Disney Interactive Media Group (DIMG) invites Disney fans and families to step into its pavilion at the D23 Expo—The Ultimate Disney Fan Event—for hands-on fun with the latest interactive entertainment products for video game consoles, mobile devices and online, based on beloved Disney stories and characters.  Every day of the D23 Expo, taking place August 19-21, 2011 at the Anaheim Convention Center, will be packed with hours of game play, special guests, interactive art contests, giveaways and more! 

Guests of the D23 Expo will be able to suit up, power up and team up as they enter Disney Universe, a multiplayer action-adventure video game set in a mix-up of Disney and Disney•Pixar inspired worlds that will be released this fall.

The Phineas and Ferb: Across the Second Dimension video game, inspired by the Disney Channel Original Movie, will be available for hands-on gameplay.  Fans will be able to play as their favorite Phineas and Ferb characters as they journey through new dimensions to battle the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz.  

Guests can also immerse themselves in the recently released and critically acclaimed Cars 2: The Video Game. Inspired by the Disney•Pixar animated film, the game allows players to dive into the Cars 2 universe alongside some of their favorite Cars personalities in exotic locations spanning the globe.

The award-winning video game Disney Epic Mickey will be featured in the DIMG pavilion and the game’s creator, legendary game designer Warren Spector, will be on hand. Mr. Spector will be making special appearances at the booth on August 19 and 20 to meet guests and sign autographs.

Online gamers can play Disney’s latest social games, including this summer’s smash hit Gardens of Time and the popular online virtual world for kids Club Penguin.  Guests who want Disney games on the go, can try out the latest mobile games, such as Cars 2 and Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, available for iPhone, iPad and Android.

For aspiring young Disney artists and animators, Disney.com’s Create will offer its newest collection of online creativity tools for making digital paintings, comic books, animated pets, photo mashups, music slideshows and animations.  During the D23 Expo, the new Disney Epic Mickey Digital Painter will be featured in the booth and guests will be invited to participate in daily art contests judged by Warren Spector for the chance to win exclusive D23 DIMG prize packages.

'Graveyard Shift' in Whiteware

Last week, Art of Disney announced a merchandise event to help celebrate the resort’s 40th anniversary to be held at the Contemporary Resort on Friday, September 30th from 9:00am-9:00pm.

For the event, one of the Special Merchandise items being offered is the Caretaker and Dog (pictured at right) from the Walt Disney Classics Collection sculpted by Ruben Procopio, a Numbered Limited Edition of 250.  Special Note: Room for 1 More event will have a limited number of the Graveyard Shift edition.

Part of the process in  creating memorable Walt Disney Classics Collection sculptures is creating whiteware. 

The final clay sculpt is cut into pieces and a plaster mold of each piece is made. The more complex and delicate the sculpture, the more pieces are needed.

Liquid clay called 'slip' is poured into the molds and partially air dried into 'greenware' pieces, which are then re-assembled using more slip. The greenware is sprayed with a translucent glaze and fired in a brick kiln, creating a glazed whiteware. The whiteware is then painted with a yellow dye to pick up any flaws within the whiteware.

This spectacularly detailed sculpture, requiring 98 individual molds for each piece, is crafted of fine porcelain, and is hand-painted and fired 6 times in the kiln.

Plussed with 2 hand-cast bronze horizontal fence rails and 77 individual pewter elements including pewter legs, tail and ears on the dog, 10 vertical pewter fence posts, pewter shovel, pewter lantern handle, 58 pewter leaves and branches.

The sculpture stands 10” tall by 11-1/2” wide by 9-1/2” deep and includes a Certificate of Authenticity with the imprinted signatures of Disney Creative Director and Master Artist David Pacheco and Disney Archives Director Becky Klein.

Review: "He's Really Kind and Gentle, He's My Friend"

The last of the Spring 2011 releases had begun arriving at retailers last week!

 

From the initial photo released when this sculpture was announced, I was a little concerned.  Facially, I thought the sculpture was off.  Belle, like Ariel, had so many different looks throughout the film, they're probably two of the hardest characters to capture perfectly in 3D.  A couple photos that followed (a side and back view) started to give me hope there might not be nothing to be concerned about.

Belle arrived, I took my chances and ordered vs. waiting to see in person as I had originally planned.  She arrived.  I opened the box with still a slight tinge of doubt but my fears were quickly put to rest!  Personally, of all the sculptures done of Belle in her blue attire, I think hands down this one is the best and truly captures the essence of the character!

 

A good friend of mine and fellow collector, Michelle has asked WDCC many times over the years to do Belle with that wisp of hair that falls over her forehead, not painted on the sculpture but an actual wisp of hair sculpted.  They did and its part of what makes this sculpture stand out above the rest.

 

Facially she is spot on having a porcelain look to her in the way she was painted.  A great job was done in capturing the green tone of the mirror as it appeared in the film, which contains a hologram of the Beast (as noted in two of the pictures below).  I also like in how simple this piece is, it's not static and you see a sense of movement in her apron in how the corners are turned up.

 

Kudos to Dusty Horner who did an awesome job on this version of Belle!

He’s Really Kind and Gentle. He’s my Friend, plussed with pewter hands, legs and the lock of hair Belle so endearingly brushes back throughout the film is Limited to Production Year 2011.

In a recent article I did for www.wdwfanzone.com, I wrote of my new curio that allowed me to finally display my Fury Unleashed Beast.  I displayed Beast along with Maurice and thought this version of Belle would be a great companion piece and thought the display worked out perfectly (see picture below)!

BURBANK, Calif. (July 18, 2011) – Fans attending Disney’s D23 Expo August 19-21 at the Anaheim Convention Center will have the chance to experience “a great big beautiful tomorrow” as they immerse themselves in the future of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, which is currently in the biggest period of global expansion in its history.

Drawing inspiration from a classic attraction that debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and has made stops at Disneyland in California and Magic Kingdom in Florida, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts invites attendees to hop aboard the “Carousel of Projects” for a sneak peek at concepts, designs, models, storytelling tools, and technologies currently being developed at Walt Disney Imagineering for Disney parks around the world.

Throughout the weekend, exclusively at the D23 Expo, fans will get a look at the latest details for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts’ 11 parks and five resorts around the world, as well as Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Hawaii, Disney Cruise Line, Adventures by Disney and Disney Vacation Club, including:

·         Actual figures, props and ride vehicles for Radiators Springs Racers, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the building of Cars Land, the newest land at Disney California Adventure which opens next year.

·         The opportunity to meet a classic Disney icon in an entirely new way.

·         Concepts, models and plans for Fantasyland, one of the most ambitious expansions in the 40-year history of Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

Imagineers and cast members who create and operate Disney’s parks, resorts, cruise ships, and other vacation experiences will take fans behind-the-magic with nine exciting presentations including:

·         Radiator Springs Reality: Imagineering Cars Land for Disney California Adventure – Join Disney•Pixar’s John Lasseter and a panel of Imagineers and Pixar creative talent as they share the twists and turns through the real-life development of Radiator Springs.

·         The Making of Star Tours - The Adventures Continue – Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald will share the inside scoop on how Walt Disney Imagineering and George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic began laying the groundwork for a new version of Star Tours.

·         A Good Look at Buena Vista Street – Imagineers Lisa Girolami, Ray Spencer, and Coulter Winn provide a preview of the new entrance to Disney California Adventure, an idealized depiction of the Los Angeles Walt Disney lived and worked in throughout the 1920s and 1930s.

·         Imagineering the Dream and the Fantasy – Imagineers Joe Lanzisero and Bob Zalk talk about charting the design course of the two newest Disney cruise ships.

·         Legends of Walt Disney Imagineering – Disney Legend Marty Sklar will lead a celebration of the careers and accomplishments of Walt Disney Imagineering, including Alice Davis, Orlando Ferrante, Bob Gurr, and Don Iwerks. With special guest and current Imagineer Kim Irvine, daughter of Disney Legend Leota Toombs.

In addition, and for the first time, the Parks and Resorts pavilion will also feature Mickey’s of Glendale, an outlet of Walt Disney Imagineering’s employee-only store, where—for just three days– guests can shop for “Carousel of Projects” souvenirs and collectibles and Walt Disney Imagineering merchandise not available anywhere else.

Tickets to the D23 Expo are available at http://www.D23Expo.com.  Admission includes access to all experiences and entertainment at the D23 Expo, including the Disney Legends Ceremony, and can be purchased for single days or for the full three days of festivities. Admission is $47 for a one-day adult ticket and $37 for children 3-12. Three-day passes are $136 for adults and $106 for children. Members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club will receive a discount for up to four admissions, as well as early entry to each day of the D23 Expo for themselves and their guests.

Celebrating 70 years of publication in 2010, Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories is one of the best-selling and longest-lived comic books ever, and this fun-filled anthology of multi-paneled Disney delights has featured many unforgettable covers over the years.

Attributed to veteran artist Carl Buettner, the famous cover art from issue number 33, June 1943, features Mickey favorite: the infinity cover, in which characters read a comic cover picturing them reading a cover that pictures them reading that cover, and so on, into infinity.

The latest release in the Classic Comics Series (4th release in series), sculpted by Bruce Lau is an irresistible sculpture artfully celebrating Disney’s flagship comic book—still published today—while also spotlighting two of the greatest stars from its pages.
