On Friday, August 19, in the Disney Channel booth, fans of all ages are invited to join Pulitzer Prize-winning humor columnist Dave Barry and noted New York Times best-selling author Ridley Pearson, co-authors of the Peter and the Starcatchers series of prequels to Peter Pan, along with beloved Jake and the Never Land Pirates characters Jake, Captain Hook, and Mr. Smee, for a celebration of the power of imagination and the magic of Disney storytelling. This event also includes an appearance by actor David Arquette (the voice of Skully in the hit Disney Junior series Jake and the Never Land Pirates) and a special announcement from The Walt Disney Company Corporate Citizenship team.

In addition, storytellers will read Disney favorites on Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the Disney Publishing booth, including the Winnie the Pooh and Cars 2 Read-Along digital books, The Ballad of Nessie by Kieran Lachlan, and The Little Golden Book Tangled.

Exclusive giveaways include a high-quality print in honor of the late Disney artist Mary Blair, a chance to win two parks passes through the Disney English referral program, and a special card to download a “Build-a-Roller-coaster” app.

Additional highlights of DPW’s lineup at D23 Expo 2011 include:

A 'Leap into Retirement' for Tiana & Naveen!

AT DISNEY’S D23 EXPO, AUGUST 19-21

BURBANK, Calif. – August 9, 2011 – Exclusively at Disney’s D23 Expo August 19-21 at the Anaheim Convention Center, Disney film fans will go behind the scenes to explore the exciting roster of projects on the horizon at The Walt Disney Studios, with a variety of panel discussions, sneak peeks, and exhibits.

On Saturday, August 20, Rich Ross, chairman, The Walt Disney Studios; Sean Bailey, president, Production, The Walt Disney Studios; John Lasseter, chief creative officer, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios; and Kevin Feige, producer and president, Marvel Studios, will present a not-to-be-missed look at The Walt Disney Studios’ upcoming film slate, which includes Disney’s The Muppets, John Carter, Disney•Pixar’s Brave, Marvel’s The Avengers, Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, Oz: The Great and Powerful, and more.

Review: WDCC Lily of the Valley Fairy from 'Fantasia'

The latest WDCC release from Fantasia arrived at retailers earlier this week, the Lily of the Valley Fairy.  As with all the previous Gossamer Fairies that have been done, this one is every bit as stunning and beautiful.

First, I'd like to thank friend and fellow collector Matthew for sharing photos of his sculpture that will be featured in this review (some very cool, amazing photos!).

When the Summer releases were first announced, this was one of the most anticipated releases for me!  Discovering Fantasia late, as many know (thanks to some pretty cool friends), I learned to appreciate this film and really started to collect pieces from this film since.

The sizing of this piece is perfect and works in well with the existing gossamer fairies.  The leaves are reminiscent of the Dewdrop Fairy and the color palette used in the lily of the valley flowers are subtle shades of orange, yellow, purple and cream.  Another feature I like, the gossamer fairy is in scale with the Autumn, Dewdrop and Blossom Fairies.  This is another factor that stands out in this recent release, WDCC remaining consistent in sizing with previous releases.  I do not own the Frost Fairies, so didn't include them in the size comparison.  

Richly plussed with bronze details including the flower stem and the glistening Fairy herself, this exquisite sculpture embodies all the enchantment of Walt Disney’s animated masterpiece and makes the ideal complement for the other dazzling Fantasia Fairy pieces from the Walt Disney Classics Collection.

"The Gentle Glow of a Luminous Lily" sculpted by Kent Melton (who sculpted all the previous Gossamer Fairy releases) is a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 500.

Matthew also shared an image of his Lily of the Valley Fairy displayed with the Dewdrop Fairy, Mushrooms and Blossom Fairy to get a size perspective on the piece for comparison purposes.  I have mine displayed with the Blossom and Milkweed Ballerinas.  The purple in the Lily of the Valley, displayed adjacent to the Milkweed Ballerinas brings out the subtle purple shading in the Milkweed sculpture.

·         On Stage 28, guests can enjoy the “it’s a small world: Celebrating 45 Years” panel discussion. Disney Play at the Disney Living Pavilion

With toys featuring everyone’s favorite Disney characters and stories, there is something for all ages.

·         Making its first public appearance, Rock Star Mickey, the new animated plush from Fisher-Price will rock out at D23 Expo. Don’t miss a special performance with rocker and Broadway star Constantine Marioulis and Rock Star Mickey on the Disney Living Pavilion center stage. Releasing this holiday season at retailers nationwide, Rock Star Mickey is already generating buzz as a must-have holiday gift. ·         The Disney It’s a Small World area will feature fashionable infant and children’s clothing and accessories inspired by Mary Blair’s original art of the iconic attraction. Kids can create Disney It’s a Small World-inspired arts and crafts and participate in a shoe styling competition. A Nordstrom pop-up shop will feature the latest infant and toddler apparel collection, TOMS Shoes and BASQ personal care products.

·         Guests can meet the artists and get an autograph from winners of fashion leader Uniqlo’s “Mickey By” global t-shirt design contest. They can also preview and purchase Hallmark’s cherished annual Disney keepsake ornament featuring a Pook-a-Looz style Steamboat Willie, available first for D23 Expo guests. And at Retro 51, makers of fine writing instruments, guests are invited to drop off the ugliest pen they own at their booth to compete for cool prizes because “Life is too short to carry an ugly pen!”™

·         At the Disney Beauty lounge, guests can stop by for pampering and special beauty demonstrations. Kids can have fun, too, with Disney face art and hair styling. More of the Summer 2011 Releases Arriving at Retailers!

Yesterday retailers started to see the arrival of the Lily of the Valley Fairy from Fantasia.  Today, Baloo and Mowgli from The Jungle Book, another release from the Summer 2011 Announcement has started to arrive! 

Be-bopping along and singing a jungle song, Baloo the jive-talking bear and Mowgli the man-cub are an inseparable pair. 

“I kept thinking how can I make this bear and this kid feel closer together,” noted animator Ollie Johnston, while fellow Disney artist Frank Thomas added, that with Baloo and Mowgli,“I think we got the strongest friendly relationship between two characters we ever got in any picture.” 

Baloo was to originally have had a much smaller role in The Jungle Book but the relationship between the boy and bear was so heartfelt, the jazzy bruin’s role
grew. 

Plussed with a pewter cowlick on Mowgli, this irresistible sculpture highlights the humorous and heartwarming jungle-born kinship between two of Walt Disney’s most cherished characters — the endearing “Little Britches” and his ever-lovin’ “Papa Bear.
