Mickey to the Rescue!: A New Scene from 'Fun and Fancy Free'

Part of the 3rd Quarter unveiling was a new scene that wasn't part of the sneak peek of the upcoming fall and winter releases during the Pirates of the Caribbean Adventures on the 7 Seas Lagoon Event held at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort last month from Fun and Fancy Free.

This new scene captures the moment when Mickey Mouse frees Goofy, Donald and the Singing Harp who were locked in a box by Willie the Giant, owner of the Castle. This 5-piece Open Edition release features Goofy: "Tread Lightly" (8-1/4"), Donald Duck: "Not a Peep" (5"), Mickey Mouse: "Shhh!" (4-3/4"), the Singing Harp: "Beautiful Diversion" (8") and Willie's Chest Accessory (Height TBD). All pieces sculpted by Jacqueline Perreault Gonzales.

Special Note: The Mickey and the Beanstalk scene are all prototypes. In particular the Singing Harp is a first porcelain prototype and the colors will be adjusted slightly including on her face. Willie's Chest will also change colors slightly, the spool of thread coloration is not correct, etc.

Trivia: Fun and Fancy Free (first released on September 27, 1947) is a feature film produced by Walt Disney and released by RKO Radio Pictures. It was one of the "package films" (feature-length compilations of shorter segments) that the studio produced in the 1940s.

This film features two fanciful stories:

* "Bongo," the story of a circus bear cub, who runs away from the circus to the wild and the adventures there that follow.

* "Mickey and the Beanstalk," a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy as peasants who discover temperamental Willie the Giant's castle in the sky through the use of some magic beans. This was the last cartoon in which Mickey Mouse was voiced by Walt Disney.

Once additional angles and/or information becomes available, I will update both here and the website. Look forward to seeing the prototypes in August. Scheduled Release Date: September 2007.

  1. I like this scene very much. It'll be my first scene with Fab 5 characters, cause i only collect from the animated features, and this fit that rule. I love how they look. The look on Donalds face is priceless and the accesories make it look even better. Can't wait to get it. Love how the floor on mickey seems real wood. So realistic. Love this scene.

  2. Don, when you posted your teaser this morning, I didn't dare hope that it would be this scene... but I was so overjoyed when I saw that the new scene would be from "Mickey and the Beanstalk"!

This is really more than I could have imagined, and too have included the accessory chest to boot! Wow.

I've always been so bummed that I missed out on "Big Trouble" with Willie... now, at least, I can have the rest of the gang!

    Thank you WDCC again!

  3. I am in love with this scene. It is my daughter's favorite right now. I totally love the chest and the harp. It's great when scenes add little touches like accessories, bases, or backdrops. It helps round out the scenes. The characters here have the perfect expressions and "look" like they are part of a scene and not standalones. WDCC hit it big with this. They actually have hit it big ALL YEAR! Cannot wait to add this scene to my collection.

  4. The harp looks really great! I will have to pick some of these pieces up when they are released. Thanks for the info!

  5. OK time for a Disney trivia type of question. Maybe it's just my perception, but knowing that Fun and Fancy Free was released prior to Peter Pan, I can't help but wonder if Marc Davis was the animator for the Singing Harp? She has many similar facial & hair characteristics to Tinker Bell which we know Marc was the lead animator on. I'm sure it's probably in a Disney character encyclopedia book, but I don't have one handy.

  6. Great trivia question Babs. I pulled out my Encyclopedia of Animated Characters and there wasn't a mention of Marc but found the following that was quite interesting:

... the magical Singing Harp; we see this golden character, a sort of cross between Marilyn Monroe and a musical instrument, singing on the balcony of the castle.

Interesting that she is compared to Marilyn Monroe as is Tinker Bell. I think I read somewhere regarding Tinker Bell, Marilyn Monroe's popularity hadn't hit yet at the time of Peter Pan, hence the possibility of Tinker Bell based on Marilyn Monroe wasn't valid. Given Fun & Fancy Free was released prior to Peter Pan, even more valid, not based on Marilyn but interesting how both characters are compared to her.

  7. HI Don,

Maybe you can answer this question. Will this scene be reading on the stamp: Fun and Fancy Free or Mickey and the Beanstalk? And why isn't there a title released, i thought with a new scene we would get a title. Would love to have a fun and fancy free title.

  8. Hi Koen,

Followed-up on your question and received the following response:

The backstamp and the Certificate of Authenticity will refer to "Mickey and the Beanstalk."

  9. Followed-up on Koen's other question regarding an Opening Title.

At this time, there is not an opening title planned but there is a possibility for a future release.

  10. Hi Don,

If and when a title comes out, it should be for Fun and Fancy Free, correct? I would assume (hate that word) that there may be a Bongo in our future by the comment "possibly for a future release" unless they are going to add more to the Mickey and the Beanstalk sequence. Maybe Humphrey the Bear needs to be around for a while before others will buy another bear.

  11. Like you, hoping (if/when) an opening title is released, it will be for Fun and Fancy Free.

Haven't seen the film in some time, so not sure if there were separate openings for each segment or not. Can you or anyone confirm if there is or not?

  12. This scene is definitely my fave of the new releases. Of course, when you teased with the chest post, my guessing for what it could mean was all over the place, but very glad to see my #1 choice is what it turned out to be.

I'd also like to see a title released to accompany this scene, and Fun and Fancy Free would seem to be the logical choice. I actually just watched the Mickey and the Beanstalk segment via my Mickey Mouse Treasures DVD, looking for ways in which Willie the Giant could be done as a release. While it did not include the first half of the film, it did show the full second half. As the story was told via a narrator who appeared in live action segments during the course of the film, there was no separate opening for the Beanstalk segment present. I'd have to watch the full fim to see if something special was shown at the beginning of the film. At the end though, it only made mention of the Fun and Fancy Free title.

I am also curious if the pieces will bear a 60th anniversary backstamp for the film since it was released in 1947.

  13. Hi Jason,

Followed-up regarding a 60th Anniversary backstamp and was told the following:

"The anniversary was one of the reasons we brought it out in 2007 but the sculptures themselves do not have a 60th Anniversary backstamp for Fun and Fancy Free.

  14. I'm hoping that when a opening title is released it'll be for Fun and Fancy Free, and not Mickey and the Beanstalk. I see this as a scene from the movie FaFF. It's like with Sorcerors apprentice, they didn't make a title about him, but in general Fantasia (or 2000).

I hope we will see the opening title released soon, as wel as opening titles for other movies where they didn't release one yet, like Fox and Hound, Mulan, Pocahontas, and so on...

  15. Thanks for the information, Don. A bit surprised and a tad disappointed there will not be an anniversary backstamp; those have always been my favorite backtstamps to have on the sculptures. Of course, the sculpts are the important thing, and still very glad to see this scene being released.
