The first of the Winter 2012 releases from the Walt Disney Classics Collection has started to arrive at retailers this week!

"Manipulative Matriarch" (Lady Tremaine), sculpted by Patrick Romandy-Simmons is a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 500 and the Villains Series release for 2012. This marks Lady Tremaine's second appearance in the line.

For those keeping track of production marks, Lady Tremaine bears the 2011 production mark, the Umbrella honoring Disney's Mary Poppins (1964).

D23′s Journey to Marceline!

D23 has announced details for their upcoming one-day event, Journey to Marceline!

Tickets go on sale today, January 26th at 10:00 PST. Please check their official page for link.

The event will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2012. Guests will board motor coaches at the Westin Crown Center (1 East Pershing Road, Kansas City, Missouri) for an adventure in Marceline.

Check in will begin at 7:30 a.m. The bus will be departing at 8 a.m. Guests will be returned to the departure location at approximately 10:30 p.m. that evening.

Cost for the event is $ 195.00 per person.

The Magic of Marceline

The Disneys' home in Marceline, where they lived from 1906-1911.

While the home has changed, it does retain some original touches.

As D23 prepares for their upcoming event, Journey to Marceline, they've posted this story about the indelible imprint Walt left on this town plus a really nice photo gallery.

The town of Marceline, Missouri (current population: 2,308), lies in the gently rolling plains of northeast Missouri. It’s a place where the sun rises over golden fields and sunlight peaks through gently bending willow trees.

There are no chain stores in its quaint downtown area, just shops, eateries, and a single movie theater. There’s no stoplight. If you’re looking for the glitz and glamour of the big city, this isn’t the place for you. But if you’re like me—a Disney fan looking to walk in Walt’s footsteps—Marceline is nothing less than an essential, and almost spiritual, destination. For Marceline shaped Walt’s vision in countless ways, and it is here that he found a way of life, an essential decency, which he would share with generations through his movies and at Disneyland.

Happy New Year to all the readers of The Duckman's Inside Report and Duckman's Blog!

It's funny how on this day, so many people take the time to sit back and look back over the previous year, myself included. 2011 saw changes on the job front, a relocation that was a positive step and became quite challenging as the year ended. I anticipate even more change as we get into 2012 but am 100% ready! It was also a year of observation. Stepping back and simply observing, avoiding getting caught in other people's drama and focusing more on family and what is truly important to me.

It was a year of less travel compared to prior years but that's ok. The trips we were able to make (WDW in May, North Wildwood in September and Upstate New York in October) left us with a lot of great memories with great friends! Our trip to New York will always be remembered as the 'best road trip evah!'

It was also a great year for WDCC! Saw some amazing sculpts released over this past year and also a chance to pick up some pieces I had previously passed on and the year ended with the anticipation of a sculpture I've long been wanting to see done .. The Three Caballeros!!

To my family and close friends (and those friends unknown), you are all amazing and I thank God daily for blessing me with you in my life! Thanks for all the fun times and great memories we continued to make in 2011 and so looking forward to making many more in 2012 plus continue to reconnect with old friends!

The 2012 Production Mark Honors 'The Jungle Book'

The Walt Disney Classics Collection sculptures feature a small Production Mark imprinted on the bottom of each piece which identifies the year it was produced.

For sculptures which have been in the line for many years, a collector might find different Production Marks in the marketplace based on when the piece was re-ordered and/or produced.

Each year, the Walt Disney Classics Collection selects a different film to honor as the Production Mark “Symbol”. For 2011, the Production Mark has been Mary Poppin’s Umbrella from Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins (1964).

The Production Mark for 2012 will be a Palm Frond from Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book (1967).

Typically the very first shipments in 2012 will still carry the 2011 Production Mark (since they start producing pieces months ahead of time) and then within a month or two the new Production Mark will begin to appear in shipments of the new sculptures.

The Walt Disney Classics Collection Announces Latest Retirement & Suspensions!

'Alien Auana', an Open Edition release was sculpted by Dave Spafford and was released in March 2010. This item is Sold Out and will not return to the line.

Also announced was the Suspension of the following:

The Lion King Opening Title
Beauty and the Beast Opening Title
Lumiere (Enchanted Size)

The Lion King Opening title was released in May, 1999. The Beauty and the Beast opening title was released in March, 1997. Lumiere ("Candlestick Casanova") specifically designed to be in exact scale to Belle & Beast was released in November, 2009.

As a reminder, a Suspension status means the item is sold out at the warehouse and there are no plans to re-order this item for at least a year or more.

Villas in the works for Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Disney Vacation Club is developing an estimated 147 villas as part of the previously announced expansion of Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.

Estimated to open in late 2013 near Disney's Wedding Pavilion, the resort's slated to become the 12th Disney Vacation Club property.

"We continually look for ways to expand Disney Vacation Club by creating resort experiences that our Members will love," said Claire Bilby, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Disney Vacation Club. D23 SPRINKLES DISNEY MAGIC ACROSS THECOUNTRY WITH A YEAR OF SPECTACULAR EVENTS

BURBANK, Calif. – November 16, 2011 – In 2012, D23: The OfficialDisney Fan Club will take the show on the road as it kicks off a year-longcelebration for D23 members with a bold lineup of fantastic events.

Throughoutthe year, D23 will delight Disney fans from Boston, New York, Chicago, SanFrancisco and Palm Springs to Orlando, Burbank and even Marceline, Missouri — WaltDisney’s boyhood hometown — with the thrill and excitement of uniquely magicalDisney experiences.

“To help D23 celebrate its third‘fanniversary,’ we developed the most exciting lineup yet of special events tobring our members truly one-of-a-kind Disney experiences,” said Steven Clark,head of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club. “We’re excited to visit our fans allaround the country, and to create events we hope will surprise and delightthem.”

Starting the year are two newextraordinary experiences: D23’s JOURNEY TO MARCELINE and D23 PRESENTS THE SMOKETREE RANCH ROUNDUP.

For the first time ever, a specialtour of Walt’s boyhood hometown — Marceline, Missouri — will take place for D23 members on March 14. Led by Disney archivists,the daylong Journey to Marcelineexplores this small town (pop. 2,221) in ways that will have special resonancefor Disney fans.

In his later life, Walt found uniqueinspiration at Smoke Tree Ranch in Palm Springs, and during the incredible,three-day Smoke Tree Ranch Roundup(January 23-25), D23 Members can experience this exclusive retreat in acompletely unique way. In anotherfirst-of-its-kind, immersive experience, Disney fans will get to see what Waltcalled “my own laughing place,” taking part in screenings, presentations,activities and delectable meals, all while staying in a Smoke Tree Ranchcottage.

In the spring, D23 takes the partyon the road with the D23 ‘FANNIVERSARY’ CELEBRATION. Itcommemorates more than 40 unforgettable Disney magical milestones, eachcelebrating an anniversary in 2012. Hosted by Disney archivists, D23 Fanniversary Celebration events willbe held in Orlando, New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and Los Angelesand revisits some of the most beloved Disney theme park attractions, animatedand live-action films, TV series and more from 85 years of Disney history. Fanniversary events will be open to thepublic, with special admission and surprises created especially for D23 Membersin attendance.

In the summer, D23 will offer anall-new “Destination D” event – DESTINATION D: 75 YEARS OF DISNEY ANIMATION,held over two days at the Disneyland Resort in California (August 11-12). AsDisney marks the 75th anniversary of SnowWhite and the Seven Dwarfs, D23 marks the occasion by gathering manyrenowned Disney animation legends along with top Disney animators, voice talent(past and present) and composers — plus interesting demonstrations,fascinating presentations, autograph sessions and the chance to seeentertaining animation rarities from the Disney vaults —all in celebration of 75 years of Disney feature animation.

First Look: Pixar Forges New Princess with 'Brave'

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The newest princess from The Walt Disney Co. is more interested in shooting arrows and hunting bears than attending balls and finding Prince Charming. Merida, the spunky curly-haired Scottish heroine from the upcoming Pixar Animation Studios adventure "Brave," is breaking new ground as the archery-loving protagonist of the Oscar-winning studio's first fairytale.

"She's your anti-princess," said "Brave" co-director Mark Andrews. "She isn't your typical princess. She doesn't wear nice clothes except in a couple of scenes when her strict mom, Queen Elinor, makes her do it for special functions. She's an active and action-oriented person. She wants to get out in the outdoors of the Highlands, escaping from castle life and exploring the woods."

"Brave," scheduled for release June 22, 2012, is set in medieval Scotland and features the voices of "Boardwalk Empire" actress Kelly Macdonald as Princess Merida, Emma Thompson as Queen Elinor, Billy Connolly as her one-legged father, King Fergus, as well as Craig Ferguson, Kevin McKidd and Robbie Coltrane as the kingdom's noblemen.

Despite being the first Pixar film to focus on a female heroine, Andrews said "Brave" will be less about girl power and more about the oppositional relationship between mother Elinor and daughter Merida, likening the defiant red-haired princess to a scrutinized teenager who is forced to attend the same high school where her mother serves as the principal.

In the film's full-length trailer, out Tuesday, Merida's father tells of the 12-foot-tall beast with razor-sharp claws, a face scarred with a dead eye and "hide littered with the weapons of fallen warriors," that chomped off his leg while the rebellious Merida transverses a lush forest, ascends a mountain and lands a bull's eye at a tournament.

The role of Merida in "Brave" marks the first animated film part for Macdonald, a Scottish actress who has appeared in such movies as "Gosford Park" and "Finding Neverland." She acknowledged being struck by the significance of playing Disney royalty during a visit to Disneyland earlier this year as she watched Disney princesses gallivanting during the afternoon parade.

"I just thought, 'My goodness! There's eventually going to be a Merida doing her thing up there,'" said Macdonald. "The people that they cast to be the characters and wear the costumes at Disneyland have to do the accent, so somebody at Disneyland is going to be doing me. Some American girl will have to do my accent. It kind of blows my mind, really."

Other imagery teased in the new trailer includes Merida encountering mystical blue-hued wisps and the gnarly bear that took her father's leg. Andrews said despite the 3-D film's darker tone and visual style compared with past Pixar movies like "Toy Story" and "Cars," ''Brave" won't be "missing any of the comedy or entertainment you usually associate with Pixar."

That quixotic quackster Donald Duck journeys into South America with dapper José Carioca from Brazil and ebullient Panchito Pistoles the Mexican rooster as his tour guides.

Panchito graciously invites his two amigos to accompany him on “a nice little trip to Mexico on the magic serape.” This multi-colored magic carpet sweeps the birds-of-a-feather trio over the beautiful land of song, dance and romance.

Panchito, José (who was introduced in Saludos Amigos) and Donald were animated throughout The Three Caballeros by, among others, Ollie Johnston, Ward Kimball and John Lounsbery, so it’s obvious Walt Disney wanted his most magnífico talent to bring these animated stars to the screen.

Over the past couple days, my blog entries have focused on my one of my favorite holidays, Halloween!

Tradition is always watching one of my favorite shorts, Trick or Treat. You may notice, music is an integral part of the film, as the song “Trick or Treat” both opens and closes the cartoon, and is woven perfectly throughout. The cartoon was the first screen depiction of trick or treating and as a special treat, below is the animated short for your viewing pleasure (courtesy of YouTube.com).

Disney's Halloween Treat!

While surfing the net, I came across mention of a Disney Halloween Special entitled Disney's Halloween Treat. This classic TV Special first aired Halloween October 31, 1982 and was shown every year after that up until 1995 (which is ironic since that’s when Disney bought ABC).

Originally it was hosted by a talking Jack O’ Lantern and was the unusual length of 47 minutes (a little over an hour if you count the commercials). Around 1990 the special was edited and several pieces clipped in order to fit a 30 minute time slot. The Jack O’Lantern host was also replaced by the Magic Mirror from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Below is a sample of some of the shorts and tidbits that were included in the special:

History of the Haunted Mansion

Back when Anaheim was a sleepy town filled with orange groves, Walt envisioned a haunted mansion for the "Mickey Mouse Park" he planned to build near his California film studio. When that small park morphed into the larger Disneyland in the mid-1950s, a haunted house concept remained part of the plans, but never made it past the drawing boards.

According to Marty Sklar, vice chairman and principal creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, the Haunted Mansion spawned many ideas and went through a number of revisions during its long gestation period. Like the Pirates of the Caribbean, the Disney creative team initially designed the attraction as a walk-through experience. The plans included an old sea captain's seaside manor and a more unsettling "Bloodmere Manor" concept with some bloody shenanigans. The Headless Horseman even galloped his way into one of the plotlines.
The treatments piled up, and a slew of Imagineers developed a gaggle of illusions and effects through the years. When the project finally got the green light in the late 1960's (it opened in 1969), Sklar said that the story was in danger of getting lost amid the effects. Since Imagineering rule number one is that the storytelling is paramount, it was up to Imagineer X. Atencio to cobble together a coherent story.

"There was a sign I created in 1963 that keyed the whole thing," Sklar explains. After Walt came back from a trip to London, Sklar asked him what he was doing overseas. "He said that he was searching old mansions and manor houses for ghosts that didn't want to retire." Even though there was no consensus about the attraction, Walt went ahead and had the exterior of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion built in 1962. Inspired by Walt, Sklar created a large help wanted sign inviting ghosts that wanted to continue practicing their trade in active retirement at the mansion to send their resumes to the "Ghost Relations Dept." The sign hung for many years in front of the empty building. "When X. Atencio started working on the project," Sklar says, "the sign became the thread of the Haunted Mansion."

Even with Atencio's focus, Sklar says that there were many different ideas about what the Haunted Mansion should be. The attraction was the first major theme park project developed after Walt died, and without his final say, many of the Imagineers clashed over its direction. "Marc Davis and Claude Coats polarized attitudes," Sklar explains. Davis, one of Disney's "Nine Old Men" of animation, wanted a lighter tone, while background artist Coats pushed for a scarier attraction. "In the end, Marc's cartoony attitude carried the day," says Sklar. "And he probably pushed it in the right direction."

Still, some of Coats' surreal, spookier backgrounds remain evident in the early scenes of the ride. Some of the other Imagineers who lent their ideas to the Haunted Mansion project through the years and whose touch can be seen in the final version include:

Rolly Crump-- An artist and magic aficionado. His love of stage magic and illusions inspired effects such as the "Pepper's Ghost" trick used in the Grand Hall and hitchhiking ghosts scenes.
Yale Gracey-- A mechanical genius and animator, Sklar says that he was a tinkerer who loved to play around with technology. Gracey and Crump developed the "Leota effect" that brings Madame Leota to life in the Seance Room.
Walt Disney-- While Walt passed away before work began in earnest on the interior of the attraction, he played a major role in guiding the project along. One of his most important contributions was his insistence, despite the protests of most other Imagineers, that the exterior of the building remain pristine so as not to disrupt his beloved Disneyland. According to Sklar, Walt said, "Don't worry about it. We'll take care of the outside; the ghosts will take care of the inside."

The attraction opened at the Magic Kingdom in 1971, Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, Disneyland Paris as Phantom Manor in 1992. For each of these parks, the Haunted Mansion is an original attraction.
The Haunted Mansion was an opening day attraction at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, opening in 1971. This attraction (pictured at left) was developed at the same time as the Disneyland version, resulting in a very similar experience to the Disneyland version, though the slightly larger show building allowed the addition of several new scenes. The attraction was placed in Liberty Square, a small land that was a tribute to colonial America, as the Magic Kingdom did not have a New Orleans Square. Thus, the Mansion was given a Dutch Gothic Revival style based on older northeastern mansions, particularly those in older areas of Pennsylvania and in the Hudson River Valley region of New York.
At Tokyo Disneyland the Mansion was placed in Fantasyland and was a near complete clone of the Magic Kingdom version. The only exterior differences from the Magic Kingdom are two bronze griffin statues guarding the main gates, as well as the left bottom and top windows being both smashed open, and the top having some velvet curtains hanging out. The narration is in Japanese.

A little over a month ago, the Walt Disney Classics Collection announced three new upcoming releases from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The Enesco Warehouse has received their full shipment and the first of these releases, Jack Skellington's House: Surreal Estate, Limited to Production Year 2011 has begun to ship to retailers today!

Jack Skellington's House, designed by Larry Nikolai and reminiscent of the Enchanted Places. comes complete with real lights that flicker inside the windows!

As with Maleficent's Castle, the sculpture is attached to the base. I had the opportunity to see this piece in person at the recent Gallery of the Lakes signing event earlier this month and thought it was very well done and truly captured the spirit of both the film and Halloween.

When the holidays roll around this year, DCA may be the place to be...

Regardless of all those walls, the Christmas holiday season may offer a great reason to skip the fireworks over at Disneyland. Unless the plans change between now and October, the World of Color show that you watch in December will be filled with a lot of green and red, with sugar plum dreams to dance in your head.

They've been testing selections and musical pieces over the past couple of months for it, as well as a Halloween show. That show has been postponed till next Halloween when the park will be fully open, sans walls. It's pretty impressive, from what I've been told, but for now it appears that the Christmas/Holiday show will be the only one. Which isn't a bad thing at all.

The Walt Disney Classics Collection announced today the Fall 2011 Releases! This announcement included three (3) new releases from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.

This latest announcement includes Mr. Hyde ("Macabre Madman") and the Cyclops ("Myopic Monster") plus Jack Skellington's House ("Surreal Estate").

These two classic monsters join the Pumpkin King himself, Jack Skellington and those two Nightmare Before Christmas favorites Undersea Gal and the Devil.

Jack Skellington's House, reminiscent of the Enchanted Places comes complete with real lights that flicker inside the windows!

The Evil Witch is Making Her Way to Retailers!

The latest release from the Summer 2011 Announcement, the Evil Witch from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is making her way to retailers!

Of this striking scene animation historian Al Kilgore declared that, “the Witch’s trip from her castle to the forest in the fog-shrouded dawn is the most underrated scene in the entire film. It is the most subtle use of multiplane, color, and realistic animation.”

"Poisonous Plot" sculpted by Ruben Procopio is a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 750 and measures 7-1/2” H x 13-7/8” L x 7-5/8” W (at widest point).

D23 Expo Show Floor

A giant Show Floor filled with incredible pavilions and interactive areas assembles the entire world of Disney under one roof. Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives Exhibit

The legendary Walt Disney Archives will assemble a 12,000-square-foot exhibition featuring a beachside display of props, costumes and set pieces from LOST and Pirates of the Caribbean; a “House of de Vil” featuring the finalists and winner of Disney’s Fan Art Contest; a room devoted to 1982’s Tron, a display of vintage Mickey Mouse memorabilia, and much more. Plus, the Expo Show Floor will feature three iconic pieces: Walt Disney’s limousine, a 23-foot-long model of the Black Pearl from Pirates of the Caribbean and the Dharma Initiative Volkswagen van from LOST.

Ultimate Disney Trivia Tournament Presented by Hasbro^® TRIVIAL PURSUIT: Disney For All Edition

For D23 Expo 2011, Disney is launching the first-ever Ultimate Disney Trivia Tournament. Topics will range from classic to contemporary and from theme parks to films and everything in between. The tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Anaheim Convention Center on Thursday, August 18, the day before the D23 Expo opens. Twenty semi-finalists will compete in front of a live audience during a dynamic show at 6 p.m. in Stage 23 on Friday, August 19 to win a special preview cruise on the Disney Fantasy.

Arena Presentations

The 4,000-seat Anaheim Convention Center Arena will be home to spectacular presentations throughout the three days of the Expo.The event kicks off with the Disney Legends ceremony, which honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the Disney legacy including Regis Philbin, Jim Henson and the voices of many of the Disney Princesses. Other highly anticipated sessions include presentations from The Walt Disney Studios, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, Marvel Studios, and a rocking performance by the cast of the Disney Channel hit Shake It Up.

AT DISNEY’S D23 EXPO, AUGUST 19-21

BURBANK, Calif. – August 9, 2011 – Exclusively at Disney’s D23 Expo August 19-21 at the Anaheim Convention Center, Disney film fans will go behind the scenes to explore the exciting roster of projects on the horizon at The Walt Disney Studios, with a variety of panel discussions, sneak peeks, and exhibits.

On Saturday, August 20, Rich Ross, chairman, The Walt Disney Studios; Sean Bailey, president, Production, The Walt Disney Studios; John Lasseter, chief creative officer, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios; and Kevin Feige, producer and president, Marvel Studios, will present a not-to-be-missed look at The Walt Disney Studios’ upcoming film slate, which includes Disney’s The Muppets, John Carter, Disney•Pixar’s Brave, Marvel’s The Avengers, Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, Oz: The Great and Powerful, and more.

With projects from Disney, Pixar Animation Studios, and Marvel Studios, this special presentation will feature never-before-seen footage and all-star appearances by Jason Segel, Kermit, and Miss Piggy (Disney’s The Muppets), Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, and Willem Dafoe (John Carter), Kelly Macdonald and Kevin McKidd (Brave), Jennifer Garner (The Odd Life of Timothy Green), Jack McBrayer and Sarah Silverman (Wreck-It Ralph), cast members from Marvel’s The Avengers, and other surprise guests.

Review: WDCC Lily of the Valley Fairy from 'Fantasia'

The latest WDCC release from Fantasia arrived at retailers earlier this week, the Lily of the Valley Fairy. As with all the previous Gossamer Fairies that have been done, this one is every bit as stunning and beautiful.

First, I'd like to thank friend and fellow collector Matthew for sharing photos of his sculpture that will be featured in this review (some very cool, amazing photos!).

When the Summer releases were first announced, this was one of the most anticipated releases for me! Discovering Fantasia late, as many know (thanks to some pretty cool friends), I learned to appreciate this film and really started to collect pieces from this film since.

The sizing of this piece is perfect and works in well with the existing gossamer fairies. The leaves are reminiscent of the Dewdrop Fairy and the color palette used in the lily of the valley flowers are subtle shades of orange, yellow, purple and cream. Another feature I like, the gossamer fairy is in scale with the Autumn, Dewdrop and Blossom Fairies. This is another factor that stands out in this recent release, WDCC remaining consistent in sizing with previous releases. I do not own the Frost Fairies, so didn't include them in the size comparison.

Richly plussed with bronze details including the flower stem and the glistening Fairy herself, this exquisite sculpture embodies all the enchantment of Walt Disney’s animated masterpiece and makes the ideal complement for the other dazzling Fantasia Fairy pieces from the Walt Disney Classics Collection.

"The Gentle Glow of a Luminous Lily" sculpted by Kent Melton (who sculpted all the previous Gossamer Fairy releases) is a Numbered Limited Edition (NLE) of 500.

Matthew also shared an image of his Lily of the Valley Fairy displayed with the Dewdrop Fairy, Mushrooms and Blossom Fairy to get a size perspective on the piece for comparison purposes. I have mine displayed with the Blossom and Milkweed Ballerinas. The purple in the Lily of the Valley, displayed adjacent to the Milkweed Ballerinas brings out the subtle purple shading in the Milkweed sculpture.
